>> reporter: that is right. nine were transported to the hospital. we're told issues were relatively minor respiratory issues many told us they had problems with a lack of communication during the incident. iet was smoky, real smoky in the middle of the car, where we was. >> reporter: filling with what appeared to be smoke. >> a couple people had seizures i think because of the smoke. >> we'd move, then stop. then, i was on the train, they had three medical emergencies on my car, and we'd have to move them to one end of the train, then, back to the other end of the train. it was insane. >> reporter: emergency responders, firefighters and ambulances from various agencies got into place on both oakland and orinda sides. a nurse tried

to help one woman having trouble breathing. >> she started having an asthma attack. we gave her her inhaler but it's crazy. bart? this is crazy. >> we believe the problem has been resolved at this time. >> reporter: the train was able to head west under its own power where paramedics were waiting. treem involved respiratory problems. >> we're going have to do an investigation the indication is an emergency brake was engaged not on purpose. >> turned out no active fire or smoke. according to bart it was brake dust. >> reporter: officials say they're investigating how, and why the emergency brake became engaged. >> crowds of passengers were stuck at the orinda station this morning with nowhere to go. there were major delays and
